| Oh, $carlett, how I will miss you. |
I'm a machine-only kind of girl and have been since I took my first FMQ class. Yes, I even do my binding by machine. Some people find it absolutely anathema, but I want to be done with a quilt and get on to the next one, and the machine is infinitely quicker than my hands.
So, I'm going to say something I never say; I need hand work!
There's a hexie pillow I've been sewing off and on (mostly off) for a year, now, but I'm afraid it won't last the entire two weeks.

| Okay, looking at this pic, Imay be at the 2 year mark... |
I've done cross stitch forever, but don't have anything that inspires me right now.
My friend Hollie is doing a really great double wedding ring by hand, but I don't want to go quite that big.

So, any suggestions? Do you have a favorite hand project? Please, send me ALL your suggestions and feel free to send me links or pictures of your own - ipleadquilty (at) gmail (dot) com.
I'll go mad if I don't have some fabric or thread in my hands... (I've tried knitting once, but I wasn't very good at it and STILL don't know how to purl.)
Help me, bloggy, quilty friends, you're my only hope!

Hexagons---every time. Imagingermonkey is starting a quilt-a-long with hexies. LOVE. So portable and mindless. Much better than chewing your nails : )
ReplyDeleteI was trying to get away from hexies, but have to admit I love them, too. Maybe I'll go for a different size...
DeleteThanks for chiming in!
Pot holders. Fabulous, fascinating, fun to use, protective, pot holders.
ReplyDeleteYou'll get all the handwork practice you want in small, easy to feel "I'm DONE!" portions.
Not a bad idea. I always need potholders...
DeleteI'm just finishing up my latest hand work -- counted cross stitch. We went on a HUGE road trip with two kiddos at the end of last summer. No room for any craft project. After 800 miles, I went crazy and bought the first craft kit I saw! -- didn't care what it was. It's been sitting in my car as my go-to project when I'm waiting to pick up kids etc.. Finally done! I also like knitting as go to projects. Will be starting another one soon as the kids begin soccer next week. See you Thurs!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should flip through all the pics on flickr's Subversive Cross Stitch group. That is sure to give me some ideas, right?! I've got lots of floss and cloth.
DeleteI have a little/big hexagon project that I've been hand working for 2 years now. Thought it would be done that first summer. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI almost never do hand work, so I can completely understand how it has taken 2 years+. I'm only working on a pillow, now, and in 2 years, it's gotten 1/2 done. How sad is that?
DeleteWait a minute--I happen to know you always do the driving, so when are you going to be doing this handwork, pray? Remember, driving and sewing don't mix!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Mom
I don't know who you are, Ms. Mous, but you're awfully mouthy. ;-)
DeleteMaybe try out some embroidery? I like embroidering around designs on fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little afraid of embroidery, to tell the truth. I can't even do a proper French knot on my cross stitch because they always pull through and don't hold the knot on top of the fabric. Do you have any pointers or online resources you enjoy? I wouldn't mind learning, at all!
DeleteI took some Sashiko with me to South America. They're pretty quick projects but if you take a couple of those and pair them with your hexie pillow you could have some great road trip projects!
ReplyDeletei have a soft spot for hexies, but my favorite hand work project right now is the rose star block party.

i have a few in the works and i think i'll put some white around one at a time and then put it right into a frame. i could tolerate having 3 of those to hang around the house.
