Quilting and 2013 planning survey giveaway

So! How are things going for you with your holiday crafting? How much do you have left to do? Did you get it all done before Hanukkah? Are you ready for Christmas? Is it looking like New Year's gifts this year?

I spent most of the day yesterday braving the outside world. I don't recommend it. Seriously. Just stay in your studio and quilt! That's my plan for today.

I have one twin-sized quilt about 1/2 done and a queen-sized quilt basted, but not a stitch in it, yet. They're being gifted Tuesday morning. Honestly, I don't think I have a snowball's chance, but I'm having fun.

A few of you have responded to my survey - thanks very much! - and expressed an interest in FMQ information.

First, I use Machingers gloves to get a good grip on my quilt sandwich.

These are brand new, as the ones I've been using for two years started to flake bits of the rubberized tips.

Machingers falling apart

Yeesh! Isn't it amazing all the dye they pic up, too? I swear to you, I washed these multiple times according to instructions.

Machingers, old and new

Second, I place a Sew Slip on my extension table.

My Sew Slip

I purchased this one at the same shop that sold me my Janome (Creative Sewing Centers, if you're in the Twin Cities area*) and I've seen a few online. It's similar to the Supreme Slider (I started with one of those), but the Sew Slip is less expensive.

I also set up a card table behind my regular sewing table and push both right up against my cutting table. This helps to support the weight of the quilt while I'm moving it around, thereby reducing drag.

With the Sew Slip, Machingers,  open-toe presser foot that came with my Janome, and tables for support, I am able to do swirly wonders like this and much more.

I've tried FMQ without all these fabulous tools and, while it IS possible, it takes a lot more work to look good.

As I would like to hear from more of you, I am extending the survey response window to December 31. If you have not yet, please let me know what you would like to see more of here. As added incentive, I will award your choice of print materials AND the aforementioned personalized scrap bundle. TWO winners will be chosen on New Year's Day.

You can find the survey here.

Your choice of book or magazine

As we say in my house, Happy Merry Ho Ho!

*Creative Sewing Centers do not support my blog or studio in any way. I just make purchases there and have been very happy with their customer service.

A 2013 Planning Giveaway

At the office, 2013 planning almost complete; I thought a bit of planning for my blog might be in order, as well.

Of course, I can't do it without your help, since you're really why I'm here. Please let me know what you think!

Am I too wordy? Not wordy enough? Too many pictures? Just right? Are my posts too short and too far between? Is there a topic or feature you would like me to address on a regular basis? Do you have a burning question about design, piecing, layout, or free motion quilting? All input is welcome.

To give you a little incentive, I'll give away a specially designed scrap pack to one lucky commenter. Just follow the link below to the survey. If Mr. Random pulls your number on December 26, I'll put together a fun scrap pack with your favorite colors!

Away to Survey Monkey!

And just because no blog post is complete without a picture, here's a shot of what I'm quilting today while the snow keeps falling outside; a king-sized, double batted beauty. I see a need for muscle relaxers and a massage in my future.
